COURSE DESCRIPTION
Ph.D. Sociology or Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology is a Doctorate Sociology course. Sociology is the study of human cultures, communities and societies. The Ph.D. programme in sociology is based on advanced courses in research methods, statistical inference and sociological theory. Studying sociology not only increases the understanding of human society but also helps to classify human social behaviour systematically. Sociology (the science of society) assists an individual to understand himself, his capacities, talents and limitations. It tells us why man is a social animal, why he lives in groups, communities and societies. The minimum duration of the course is three years and maximum is five years. The course enhances candidates academic value along with opening various career scopes.
Ph.D. Sociology Eligibility
- M.Phil. Degree and a Post-Graduate degree in a relevant discipline with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/PH candidates) or an equivalent grade from a University or a recognised institution of higher training OR Masters Degree in a relevant discipline with minimum 55% (50% for SC/ST/PH candidates) or an equivalent grade from a university or a recognised institution of higher learning and five years of teaching/industry/administration/professional experience at senior level.
- Some reputed colleges and institutes do conduct entrance examination to get admission to their Ph.D. (Sociology) degree course.
Ph.D. Sociology Course Suitability
- They must possess research skills such as the ability to define a problem or research question, design a study to find answers, design the appropriate instruments, code and analyze the data, report (orally and in writing) on the findings.
- Applicants should have analytical skills, particularly problem-solving and sharp, critical thinking as well as the ability to analyze, synthesize, and interpret information.
- Candidates should have good communication skills or the ability to express themselves in both verbal and written form.
- Other good skills are leadership skills, including tenacity, flexibility, tolerance for risk-taking, and the ability to function well in undefined situations.
