COURSE DESCRIPTION


B.Sc. (Hons.) Nutrition or Bachelor of Science Honours in Nutrition is an undergraduate Nutrition and Dietics course. Nutrition (also nourishment or aliment) is the provision, to cells and organism, of the materials necessary (in the form of food) to support life. The diet of an organism is what it eats, which is largely determined by the perceived palatability of foods. Dieticians are health professionals who specialize in human nutrition, meal planning, economics, and preparation. The duration of B.Sc. (Hons.) Nutrition is three years and the syllabus for the course is divided into six semesters. The course is an important and job orienting in nature that opens many career scopes for the candidates after its completion.


B.Sc. (Hons.) Nutrition Eligibility

  • Candidate with at least 50% aggregate marks in any three of the following subjects- Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, Mathematics, Home Science, Economics, Computer Science, and Psychology at 10+2 are eligible. The aggregate must include any one subject among-Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology.

B.Sc. (Hons.) Nutrition Course Suitability

  • Those who have skills like an interest in food and food preparation and good communication skills to communicate with people individually and in groups and good writing skills for producing reports, leaflets etc. are the most suitable for it.
  • One should have patience and genuine concern for fellow beings, have planning and administrative skills and organizational ability.
  • They should be fit and healthy, able to work as a team member and also can work for long hours.
  • Candidates should have knowledge/skills of nutrition and healthy foods, talk with individuals and small groups, organizational skills and promote behaviour change for healthy eating.

How is B.Sc. (Hons.) Nutrition Course Beneficial?

  • Career opportunities include dietetics in hospitals, work in the food industry, food provision, education and public relations.
  • Other possibilities include a career in clinical nutrition, sports nutrition, community nutrition, public health or other health related disciplines and clinical studies.
  • A research career and private practice are also possible.
  • This course is designed to further knowledge of nutritional science and nutrition, to teach this as a scientific discipline and to produce scientists capable of working in and furthering this emerging discipline.
  • The B.Sc. (Nutrition) will produce individuals who will be able to lead the dietetics profession, and maintain and advance its standards.
